From Two Handed To Four Handed Dentistry

Many adults remember childhood dental visits where the dentist seemed to do everything alone. They often stood while working and practiced what is called two handed dentistry. Modern offices look very different.

In the 1960s, researchers and clinicians at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry introduced four handed dentistry, a more efficient way of working that relies on a chairside partner. This change reshaped everyday dental practice and opened the door to a new career – the dental assistant.

What Does A Dental Assistant Do

Dental assistants are the extra hands that keep a dental visit running smoothly. An experienced assistant:

  • Sits chairside and works directly with the dentist during procedures
  • Anticipates what the dentist and patient will need next
  • Prepares rooms and instruments between patients
  • Helps with X rays, impressions and other clinical tasks (with proper licensing)

They are constantly moving, switching between patient care, sterilization and preparation. Boredom is rare in this role, and every day brings a mix of hands on clinical work and patient interaction.

Training And Licensing For Dental Assistants

One appealing aspect of dental assisting is that formal education is not always required to get started, although a structured assisting program can be a big advantage. Many community colleges and technical schools offer programs that teach:

  • Basic dental anatomy and terminology
  • Chairside skills and instrument transfer
  • Infection control and sterilization
  • Radiology principles and safety

To take dental X rays, an assistant must obtain a special license that involves coursework and passing an exam. This additional credential expands what they are allowed to do in the office and makes them even more valuable to the team.

Stepping Up – The Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA)

For assistants who want to grow further, there is another level – the Expanded Function Dental Assistant, or EFDA. With additional education and licensing, an EFDA can perform more advanced procedures under the supervision of a dentist, such as:

  • Applying sealants to help protect teeth
  • Restoring teeth with certain types of fillings
  • Assisting with other expanded clinical functions, depending on regulations

Because of their increased responsibility and skill, EFDAs typically earn salaries that reflect their training and experience. For many people, becoming an EFDA is a natural next step in a long term dental assisting career.

Why Consider A Career In Dental Assisting

Dental assisting offers a unique combination of stability, variety and personal connection. A career in this field can provide:

  • Regular office hours compared with many other healthcare roles
  • Opportunities to learn new skills and take on more responsibility
  • A team oriented environment where everyone works toward patient comfort and health
  • Daily chances to help people feel more at ease and better about their smiles

Dental assistants are essential members of the dental health team. Their calm presence, efficiency and technical skills all contribute to a more comfortable experience for patients and a more productive day for the dentist.

Freedom Day USA – Giving Back To Those Who Serve

Community involvement is another meaningful part of many dental practices. On Thursday, October 9th, 2025, our office will take part in our 4th annual Freedom Day USA event. For this one special day, we clear our schedules so we can provide exams, cleanings, fillings and other needed dental care at absolutely no cost to veterans and first responders.

If you know someone who serves or has served, please help spread the word about this nationwide program and ask them to call us at 215-364-2420 to schedule an appointment for that day. It is a small way we can say thank you to the men and women who give so much to our communities and our country.
