When I sat down to write this article, I admit I wasn’t sure how to connect dentistry to a
home and garden theme. My first thought, “your smile is the ‘curb appeal’ of your face”
wasn’t quite right. Then I started thinking that home improvement, just like dentistry, is
really about taking care of things before they become a problem.
Most homeowners understand the importance of preventive maintenance. You change
the furnace filter before the system struggles, clean the gutters before they overflow,
and fix a small leak before it becomes a flooded basement. A little attention today can
prevent bigger, more expensive problems tomorrow.
Your mouth deserves the same approach. One of the tricky things about dental
problems is that they don’t always announce themselves. A cavity may not hurt until it
has become quite advanced. Gum disease can progress quietly, without significant pain
or obvious warning signs. Even a tooth that looks fine from the outside can have a
problem developing underneath the surface.
That is why regular dental examinations are critical. They give your dentist an
opportunity to find small problems early, when they are often easier, less invasive, and
less costly to treat.
There is another reason preventive dental care becomes especially important as we get
older: your mouth is not separate from the rest of your body. Your oral health is
connected to your overall health, and ongoing oral inflammation and infection can have
implications beyond your teeth and gums. Maintaining healthy gums, treating infections,
and keeping up with regular dental care are all pieces of taking care of the whole you.
Think of your dental visits as routine home maintenance. After all, the best home
improvements – and health improvements – are often the ones you make before a
problem arises.
