February is American Heart Month, a nationwide observance dedicated to raising awareness about cardiovascular disease and the steps we can take to protect heart health. When we think about health and wellness, we often focus on exercise, nutrition, sleep, and stress management. But there’s another vital piece of the puzzle that’s easy to overlook: gum health. Paying attention to the warning signs of periodontal (gum) disease isn’t just about protecting your smile — it’s about protecting your heart and overall well-being.

The link between periodontal disease and heart disease was first highlighted in a landmark Finnish study in 1989, which found that patients who had experienced heart attacks tended to have poorer oral health, including more severe gum disease and tooth decay. Since then, numerous studies have reinforced this association. Research indicates that people with pre-existing periodontal disease have a higher risk of heart attack and stroke — even after accounting for factors like age, race, and smoking. In fact, men with gum disease were found to be nearly twice as likely to develop cardiovascular disease.

From a wellness perspective, this connection underscores an important theme: the body functions as an integrated system. What happens in one area can influence health elsewhere. Brushing, flossing, regular dental visits, and early attention to gum disease symptoms such as bleeding, swelling, or persistent bad breath aren’t just cosmetic habits. They are acts of self-care that support your immune system, reduce inflammation, and contribute to long-term cardiovascular health.

In the bigger picture of wellness, gum health is a small daily investment with potentially life-saving returns. If you notice signs of gum disease or have concerns about your oral health, be sure to follow up with your dentist. Early evaluation and treatment can help protect not only your smile, but your overall health as well!
